Smith is a photographer and writer whose central themes are aging, marriage, and addiction, with rural Maine and New York City serving as common backdrops. His most recent show, My Principal Ghost, hung at the University of Southern Maine’s AREA Gallery in Portland.

In 2017, Smith collaborated with New York-based photographer Matthew Papa on The Loved Ones, a show about family and its many facets that hung at Speedwell Project in Portland, Maine. In the fall of 2014, he was commissioned by the Frannie Peabody Center to create SeeingME: Profiles of Resilience, a series of portraits highlighting the diverse individuals who represent the AIDS/HIV community in Maine. His ongoing project, currently titled The Ballad of Domestic Tranquility, is an autobiographical body of work that portrays gay marriage for what it is - enormous in a historical sense, yet average and unremarkable in the day-to-day.

Smith serves as Director of The Bakery Photo Collective, a darkroom and digital imaging facility located in Portland, Maine. He’s a recent graduate of the General Studies program at the International Center of Photography, and an alumnus of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies. An entertainment journalist for over 20 years, Smith has written for The New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stone, Time Out New York, The Village Voice, Out and O: The Oprah Magazine, as well as NPR, VH1 and Fuse.

Smith lives in Raymond with his husband, John.
